Since the inaugural Victor Walk in 2013, we’ve received countless messages from Canadians who want to break their silence about the trauma they suffered as a child. It’s encouraging to see thousands of people banding together through a common desire to see change, but whether victim, Victor or supporter, it never gets easier about hearing someone continue to suffer because someone didn’t believe them.
The statistics are shattering, but they don’t lie.
1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys experience an unwanted sexual act before the age of 18, that amounts to 54% of girls and 32% of boys experiencing childhood trauma in Canada. What’s even worse, 95% of child sexual abuse victims know their abuser.
It’s these numbers that are prompting us to theme the 2015 Victor Walk: We Believe You. “You’re only as sick as your secrets”, and a huge burden can be lifted simply in sharing your story. We hope the fear of not being believed isn’t keeping anyone from breaking their silence, because the Victor community is here and will always believe you.
On July 21st, Theo Fleury and the Victor Walk team will be heading across Central Alberta to raise awareness about childhood trauma, and raise money for the Breaking Free Foundation. Please join us in the Orange Movement on our tour, or at one of the nationwide rallies happening on July 25th. Details on all of the Victor Walk events are here.
